Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive and transparent database of farmers by December 2026. This initiative aims to ensure that government support via the 'Farmer Card' reaches genuine beneficiaries and safeguards farmers' rights through proper verification.

Speaking at a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office the PM's Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu stated that the Prime Minister wants the new Farmer Cards to feature a photograph and a QR code. The cards will store crucial details, including the holder's identity agricultural production history government assistance records, and market services.

The database is designed to facilitate the quick and efficient delivery of government subsidies, concessional loans and incentives directly to farmers. The process of opening dedicated bank accounts for farmers has already started, and cards will be distributed in phases once preparations are complete.

The government targets distributing the cards to 4.3 million (43 lakh) farmers during the current fiscal year with plans to bring nearly 20 million (2 crore) farmers across Bangladesh under the programme over the next three years.
