German Goalkeeper Ter Stegen Joins Ajax on Loan From Barcelona

Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has joined Ajax on a season-long loan from Barcelona to revive his national-team career under new Germany coach Jürgen Klopp.

The 34-year-old's move reunites him with Ajax's new head coach Míchel Sánchez. Ter Stegen had a difficult 12th season at Barcelona and had already moved on loan to Girona in January.

He served as Manuel Neuer's understudy through three World Cups including Germany's 2014 title win but was left out of the squad this summer. Germany was eliminated in the round of 32 by Paraguay. Ter Stegen last played for his country in June 2025 at the Nations League final four tournaments with taking his total appearances to 44.

Ajax technical director Jordi Cruijff praised the goalkeeper's experience and reputation with calling his track record outstanding.

Ter Stegen becomes the second Germany international to join Ajax this summer as the Amsterdam club looks to bounce back after finishing fifth in the Dutch Eredivisie last season. Midfielder Julian Brandt signed a three-year deal last week as a free agent following the end of his Borussia Dortmund contract.

Ajax already begun their Conference League qualifying campaign and will host Shelbourne on Friday in the first leg of their tie.
