The nation is enthusiastically celebrating Victory Day with thousands of people from all walks of life—including women, men, children, and the elderly—flocking to the National Memorial in Savar since Tuesday morning (December 16) to pay homage to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War.
The day began with the President, Sahabuddin, and the Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, paying their tributes by placing wreaths at the Memorial. The President stood in silence as a smart contingent from the Army, Navy, and Air Force offered a state salute.
Following the official tributes, the Memorial was opened to the public, who began laying flowers to commemorate the freedom fighters.
Despite the winter chill, a celebratory mood prevailed. Many attendees expressed their joy by wearing red and green clothing and painting their faces with the colors of the national flag and images of the Memorial. War-wounded freedom fighters also came to pay homage and were greeted warmly by the public.
As part of the celebration, the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force were scheduled to hold fly-pasts and a special day band at Tejgaon Old Airport from 11:00 am.
A significant highlight of the celebration is the attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the highest number of national flags parachuted. At 11:40 am, 54 paratroopers of Team Bangladesh are scheduled to display a flag-bearing skydive, marking the country's 54th year of independence. This is expected to be the world's largest flag-parachuting exhibition.
