Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called for national unity against conspiracies targeting the country’s interests, marking National Martyrs’ Day on Wednesday.
In a message commemorating the 2009 Pilkhana tragedy, the Prime Minister urged citizens to remain vigilant. "We must stand united against any conspiracy against the interests of the country and the people. Let this be our resolve on Martyrs' Day," he stated.
Reflecting on the events of February 25, 2009, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the 74 individuals, including 57 decorated army officers, who lost their lives in the BDR headquarters massacre.
"Following the end of fascist rule in 2024, this day is now observed with the solemnity it deserves as 'Martyrs’ Day,'" the PM noted. He offered prayers for the departed souls and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families.
Addressing the ongoing legal proceedings, the Prime Minister emphasized the broader implications of the tragedy.
He described the massacre as a direct strike against the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh. He noted that following the incident, there were systemic attempts to mislead the public through lies and disinformation. Defining the military as a symbol of national honor and glory, he stressed that no future conspiracies against the armed forces would be tolerated.
The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming that the collective strength of the people is the primary defense against external and internal threats to the nation.
