Landless organisations and local residents formed a human chain and submitted a memorandum in Paikgachha on Monday, demanding correction of what they described as illegal BRS land records and protesting the construction of a hatchery on acquired land.
The protest was held at noon on the main road in front of the Paikgachha Upazila Parishad. The land in question is located in Bigardana Mouza under Deluti No. 22 Polder, where protesters alleged that land acquired by Paubo has been wrongly recorded and misused.
The programme was organised by local landless groups and chaired by Sheikh Shahidul Islam, president of the landless organisation. Speakers included Kamal Hossain, divisional coordinator of Nijera Kori, regional coordinator Shahadul Islam, and local activists Abu Hasan, Munni and Lipon.
Vice-presidents of the landless organisation—Rahela Begum, Subodh Roy, Ibrahim Gazi, Monowara Begum and Rita Roy—also addressed the gathering. Speakers demanded immediate correction of land records and an end to what they termed illegal occupation and construction.
After the human chain, protesters brought out a short march and submitted a memorandum to Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, and Md Fazle Rabbi, Assistant Commissioner (Land).
