Tensions in the Middle East reached a breaking point on Monday as Iran launched a wave of drone and missile strikes against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and commercial shipping. The escalation directly followed President Donald Trump’s launch of "Project Freedom," a U.S. military mission aimed at guiding over 1,000 stranded merchant ships out of the blocked Strait of Hormuz.
The attacks mark the most significant breach of a fragile, month-old ceasefire brokered by Pakistan following the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran that began in February.
Major Strikes on UAE Infrastructure
A major fire broke out at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone in the UAE after an Iranian drone strike targeted the strategic energy hub. Fujairah is critical to global energy markets as it allows Emirati oil to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
Three Indian nationals were injured in the strike and are receiving medical care. The UAE Defense Ministry reported intercepting four cruise missiles earlier in the day, describing the assault as a "dangerous and treacherous escalation".
Flight paths to Dubai and Sharjah were disrupted, with multiple aircraft diverted as regional airspace became unsafe.
Naval Confrontations in the Strait
The U.S. Navy and Iranian forces engaged in direct combat as "Project Freedom" commenced. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), stated that Apache and Seahawk helicopters destroyed six Iranian small boats that were threatening commercial vessels.
Tehran dismissed the U.S. account, claiming instead that it fired "warning shots" at U.S. warships and remains in control of the waterway. A South Korean cargo ship and an empty ADNOC tanker were reportedly struck by explosions or drones during the chaos.
Trump’s ‘Project Freedom’
President Trump announced the mission on Truth Social, characterizing it as a "humanitarian gesture" to save crews running low on food and supplies. The operation involves with Guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and 15,000 service members.
Providing a "defensive umbrella" and mine-clearance data to help ships exit, rather than providing individual military escorts.
"Iran has taken shots at unrelated nations... Perhaps it’s time for South Korea to join the mission!" Trump posted, noting that U.S. forces had neutralized "fast boats" belonging to Tehran.
