The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division has cancelled the bail granted to former army personnel Hafizur Rahman, the sole arrested accused in the widely discussed Sohagi Jahan Tonu murder case.

Justice Md. Rezaul Haque of the Appellate Division's Chamber Court passed the order on Thursday (August 6), directing Hafizur to surrender before the relevant court within the next 24 hours. The court further directed law enforcement agencies to arrest him if he fails to surrender voluntarily within the stipulated timeframe.

Earlier on August 2, a High Court bench comprising Justice Zakir Ahmed and Justice Sathika Hossain had granted bail to Hafizur Rahman. Following the order, he was released from Cumilla Central Jail on the evening of August 4.

The news of his release sparked severe criticism across social media platforms, prompting the state to file a petition with the Chamber Court seeking the cancellation of his bail.

Hafizur Rahman was arrested by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) the investigating agency of the case on the night of April 22 this year from his residence in Keraniganj, Dhaka, over a decade after the murder. The following day, he was produced before a Cumilla court, which placed him on a three day remand for questioning.

Upon completion of the remand, he had been held in judicial custody until his recent temporary release.
