President Donald Trump has threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on all Canadian imports, citing anger over an anti-tariff television commercial sponsored by the province of Ontario.
The ad, which ran during the World Series, used a speech by former President Ronald Reagan to criticize Trump's current trade policies. Trump, posting on Truth Social while traveling to Malaysia, called the ad a "FRAUD" and a "hostile act," accusing Ontario of spreading misinformation. He stated the new 10% tariff would be "over and above what they are paying now."
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the ad would be pulled after the weekend. It remains unclear what authority Trump would use to implement the new tariff, the effective date, or which specific goods would be targeted.
Canada's Minister responsible for US trade relations, Dominic LeBlanc, stressed that trade negotiations are managed by the federal government, not the provinces, and emphasized the need for direct engagement with the US administration.
