Sheikh Tasnim Afroz (Emi), the former Vice-President of Dhaka University’s Shamsunnahar Hall, was released from Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail on Wednesday afternoon.
Jail authorities confirmed her release at 2:45 PM following an interim bail order from the High Court in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Jailer Shirin Akhter stated that Emi was freed after officials verified the court documents and confirmed she faced no other pending arrest warrants.
The High Court bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted the bail on April 30 after hearing her application. Advocate Muha. Noman Hossain represented Emi, while Assistant Attorney General Md. Al Amin appeared for the state.
Emi was arrested on March 8 following an incident in front of Shahbagh Police Station. According to case records, she and several others attempted to broadcast a historic speech on March 7, which led to a confrontation with other student groups using microphones. Police detained her the following day and she had remained in custody since.
