A Chattogram court on Thursday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for a 2016 drug smuggling case involving the recovery of Phensedyl in the city’s Halishahar area.
The verdict was delivered by Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Afroza Jasmine Koli.
The convicts, identified as Md. Delwar (40) and Raja Mia (40), were present in the courtroom. Alongside the life sentence, the court imposed a fine of 10,000 BDT on each; failure to pay will result in an additional three months of imprisonment.
According to Bench Assistant Naeem Hossain, the court reached the decision after hearing testimonies from five witnesses, which proved the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Following the verdict, the convicts were sent to jail under a sentence warrant.
Court records show that on April 18, 2016, Halishahar Police intercepted a speeding truck (Registration No: Chattogram-Metro-D-05-0024) heading toward the port. Although the driver attempted to flee, police and local witnesses successfully seized the vehicle. A subsequent search yielded 110 bottles of Indian-manufactured Phensedyl.
Sub-Inspector Jamir Uddin of Halishahar Police Station filed the case under the Narcotics Control Act. Following a formal investigation and the framing of charges, the court proceeded with the trial leading to today’s conviction.
