Chattogram Court Sentences Fugitive to Life Imprisonment in Yaba Case

A Chattogram court on Wednesday (July 22) sentenced a fugitive man Md. Sohel (37) to life imprisonment in a narcotics smuggling case. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 50,000 with an additional six-month prison sentence in default of payment.

The verdict was delivered by Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Tajul Islam. The convict son of Md. Shafi hails from the Dhurung area of Fatikchhari Upazila.

According to court records Armed Police Battalion (APBN) personnel intercepted Sohel on June 1, 2019 near the VVIP gate of Shah Amanat International Airport. A search revealed 5,050 Yaba tablets hidden in his school bag and socks. Following the seizure, Sub-Inspector Md. Abul Kalam filed a case at Patenga Model Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.

Court Bench Assistant S. M. Kawsar Sagar stated that the prosecution proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt through five witness testimonies and physical evidence. As Sohel remained absconding during the verdict, the court issued an arrest warrant to execute the sentence.
