A long-standing dream for the people of Bogura moved closer to reality on Thursday as the government gave policy-level approval to upgrade Bogura into a City Corporation and establish Mokamtola as a new Upazila.
The landmark decision was made during a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reform (NICAR), chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The news sparked widespread celebrations across the district, with residents and business leaders hailing it as a historic milestone for northern Bangladesh.
Administrative Expansion
The newly approved Mokamtola Upazila will be formed by combining the Mokamtola Union of Shibganj with four surrounding unions. Locals believe this will significantly reduce administrative hurdles, making education, healthcare, and land services more accessible to the rural population.
Meanwhile, the elevation of Bogura to a City Corporation is expected to transform the urban landscape. Planned modernization, including improved drainage, wider roads, and better waste management, is now on the horizon for the city's residents.
Economic and Social Impact
State Minister for Local Government, Mir Shahe Alam MP, expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister, noting that these changes will accelerate regional development. "This will create new opportunities for investment, business expansion, and employment in the north," he said.
Local professionals and business leaders also welcomed the move. Advocate Abdul Wahab noted that the new Upazila would ease legal and administrative suffering, while local educators believe it will provide better government support for the schooling system.
Following the NICAR approval, official gazettes and administrative procedures are expected to commence shortly.
