A new police station, Halda Thana, has been approved by dividing Hathazari Thana in Chittagong. The government has also approved a new upazila named Uttar Fatikchhari.
The decisions were taken at the 121st meeting of the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR) held at the Cabinet Division at the Secretariat on Wednesday (July 1). According to the information provided, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chaired the meeting.
Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu said the new upazilas and police stations were approved to improve access to government services, taking into account population growth and geographical realities.
The approval of Halda Thana is considered a significant development for Chittagong. Residents had long demanded the division of Hathazari Thana due to its large population, wide geographical area and increasing administrative workload.
NICAR also approved three new upazilas. Uttar Fatikchhari has been created by combining six unions from Fatikchhari Upazila in Chittagong district. Bangra Upazila will be formed by dividing Muradnagar Upazila in Comilla, while Pagla Upazila will be created from eight unions under Pagla Thana in Gafargaon Upazila of Mymensingh district.
The meeting also approved changes to the administrative boundaries of the Purbanchal New City Project under RAJUK. Areas of the project currently located in Narayanganj and Gazipur districts will be brought under Dhaka district for administrative purposes.
Administrative experts say the creation of new police stations and upazilas is expected to improve law and order, land administration, revenue collection, social security and other public services by bringing government offices closer to residents.
The new Halda Thana is expected to ease administrative pressure on Hathazari and improve service delivery for local communities.
The government will implement the decision in phases, including boundary demarcation, infrastructure development and recruitment of personnel.
