The Department of Fisheries distributed fish fry, fish feed, aerators, and agricultural inputs to local fish farmers in Morelganj, Bagerhat, on Thursday (July 2).
The initiative, part of the third phase of the Union Level Fisheries Technology Service Extension Project, aims to modernize local aquaculture and maximize the use of household ponds. The distribution took place at noon on the Upazila Parishad premises, organized by the Senior Upazila Fisheries Office.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Habibullah attended as the chief guest, with Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Ranjit Kumar chairing the event. Other notable attendees included Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Saiful Islam, Upazila Engineer Ariful Islam, Upazila Primary Education Officer Khandaker Sefainul Arefin, and local BNP Vice President F.M. Shamim Ahsan.
The project provided materials to nine selected farmers from across the upazila's nine unions to promote modern farming methods. Each beneficiary received approximately 2,500 monosex tilapia fry, 80 kg of fish feed, coconut and eggplant seedlings, seven types of fruit and vegetable seeds, and other agricultural supplies. An additional 5,000 indigenous tengra fish fry were also distributed.
Four shrimp farmers received aerators to improve water quality and boost production. Previously, the project had distributed mixed carp, bane, and tengra fry to other local farmers.
According to the fisheries office, these inputs will support the establishment of four technology-based demonstration farms and nine household pond demonstration farms focusing on Tengra, Tilapia, and Bhetki. Officials noted that the project is designed to encourage modern aquaculture techniques, increase domestic fish production, and ultimately improve household nutrition and income.
