Six More Children Die With Measles Symptoms in Bangladesh

Six more children have died from measles or measles-like symptoms in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

During the same period, 1,101 children were newly reported with confirmed measles or symptoms consistent with the disease. Of them, 80 tested positive for measles, while 1,021 had measles-like symptoms.

The DGHS released the updated figures on Sunday afternoon.

According to the health authorities, from March 15 through August 16, a total of 809 children have died after developing measles-like symptoms. Another 99 children who were confirmed to have measles have also died.

That brings the combined number of deaths associated with confirmed measles and measles-like symptoms during the period to 908.

In the latest 24-hour period, 963 children were admitted to hospitals, while 850 were discharged.

Since March 15, health authorities have recorded 142,797 suspected measles cases and 17,880 confirmed cases nationwide. A total of 124,457 patients have been hospitalized, of whom 119,939 have since been discharged.

The figures highlight the continued scale of the measles outbreak and the pressure it is placing on hospitals and the country's healthcare system.
