Iran is finalizing preparations for the historic state funeral of its former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Following his death in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, the nation will observe unprecedented six-day mourning ceremonies under a massive security blanket. According to international media, including Al Jazeera, the farewell will not be limited to Iran.
Ceremonies will span five major cities across both Iran and neighboring Iraq. The commemorations will commence on Saturday, July 4, with Khamenei lying in state at Tehran's Grand Mosalla.
Following a massive public procession through the capital, his remains will be taken to the holy city of Qom on July 7, and subsequently to the Iraqi Shiite centers of Najaf and Karbala. Khamenei’s body will finally be transported to his birthplace of Mashhad for burial on July 9.
Authorities anticipate a staggering turnout of 15 to 20 million people. In response, law enforcement and security forces have been placed on high alert to manage crowds and ensure safety. Senior officials and representatives from over 30 countries—including Russia, China, Pakistan, India, Georgia, and Cuba—are expected to attend, alongside religious leaders from 90 nations. Earlier this month, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed to his parliament that he would travel to Iran for the ceremonies.
