Heavy rains and landslides triggered by Typhoon Narra have battered northern Vietnam and southern China's Guangxi region with causing severe infrastructure damage and displacing tens of thousands of residents.
Although weather officials stated that the typhoon lingered over the Gulf of Tonkin without making direct landfall and torrential rains over recent days caused widespread destruction across both countries.
In northern Vietnam, mountainous provinces including Lang Son and Cao Bang recorded up to 300 millimeters of rainfall within 24 hours. The deluge caused at least one fatality and displaced more than 4,300 households. In Quang Ninh, home to the UNESCO World Heritage site Ha Long Bay, floodwaters submerged city streets with disrupting transport, fishing and tourism. Power outages affected nearly 55,000 families while floodwaters destroyed over 10,000 hectares of crops.
Across the border in China's Guangxi region water levels in 15 rivers surpassed warning thresholds. CCTV footage showed brown floodwaters engulfing parts of Chongzuo city also submerging roads and low-rise buildings.
Chinese authorities relocated approximately 54,000 residents, including over 8,000 moved to emergency shelters. Rescue personnel used boats to evacuate citizens trapped by knee-deep water in affected urban areas.
Meteorologists forecast continued heavy downpours across Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan and Fujian provinces through Wednesday, maintaining high risks of further flash floods and landslides.
