Late Abdus Shahid, former president of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), never compromised on the principles of democracy and media freedom, journalist leaders said at a memorial meeting on Monday.
The event was organized at the DUJ office in the National Press Club to mark the sixth death anniversary of the veteran leader. Speakers remembered him as an uncompromising voice who consistently fought for the press and journalists' rights.
At the beginning of the meeting, prayers and a munajat were offered seeking divine forgiveness for the souls of Abdus Shahid and late veteran photojournalist Khaled Haider.
The memorial was chaired by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Vice-President AKM Mohsin and moderated by DUJ General Secretary Khurshid Alam.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, BFUJ Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury described Abdus Shahid as a pioneer of honest and courageous journalism against injustice and irregularities.
