Despite a largely dry June, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has warned of heavy monsoon rainfall this July, which could trigger short-term flash floods in the country's northern, northeastern, and southeastern regions. According to the BMD's long-range weather forecast issued on Wednesday, one or two low-pressure systems may form over the Bay of Bengal this month.
One of these systems is likely to intensify into a monsoon depression, bringing heavy downpours. While overall rainfall is expected to remain normal nationwide, river water levels are projected to rise significantly due to the monsoon winds. Chattogram division may experience above-normal rainfall, potentially reaching up to 694 mm. Conversely, Rajshahi is predicted to receive the lowest rainfall, estimated at around 311 mm. Thunderstorms and lightning are also anticipated to occur on 8 to 9 days across different parts of the country in July.Looking back at June, Bangladesh experienced roughly 29.4 percent less rainfall than average. The highest single-day rainfall was 178 mm, recorded in Netrokona on June 12.
During multiple heatwave spells last month, Jashore recorded the country's highest temperature of 38.6°C on June 4, while Narsingdi saw the lowest at 18.5°C on June 19. Given the volatile weather patterns, the Met Office has advised all relevant authorities and the public to remain vigilant regarding potential heavy rains, sudden thunderstorms, and flash floods throughout July.
