A Bhola court sentenced a man to death on Thursday for the 2019 murder of his wife in Borhanuddin Upazila. District and Sessions Judge Sharif M. Reza Zaker delivered the verdict against Moktar Hossain for the premeditated killing of his wife, Afjun Begum.
According to court documents, the couple had been married for 15 years and shared two children. Tensions escalated when Afjun protested against Moktar for repeatedly harassing her younger sister. In retaliation, Moktar subjected Afjun to physical abuse and death threats. On the night of June 30, 2019, he strangled her to death in their home in Phulkachia village, Kachia Union.
Following the murder, the victim's father filed a case naming his son-in-law as the primary accused.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Md. Taib stated that the prosecution successfully proved the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. The conviction relied on a comprehensive police investigation, a confessional statement from the accused under Section 164, witness testimonies, and the victim's autopsy report.
