Nahid Islam, the Opposition Chief Whip and Convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), has called for unwavering responsibility in protecting the civil rights of all citizens, regardless of their religion or caste.
Speaking as the chief guest at an NCP joining ceremony at the Chattogram Press Club on Thursday afternoon, Nahid Islam emphasized that ensuring the security of minorities is essential for the nation's sovereignty.
Concerns Over West Bengal Elections
Addressing recent political developments in neighboring West Bengal, the NCP leader noted that while elections there are an internal matter, the disenfranchisement of millions—particularly from the Muslim and Matua communities—is deeply concerning.
"We have seen voting rights taken away and ongoing torture of minorities across the border," Nahid said. "This has a direct impact on Bangladesh. We must act responsibly to ensure that Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians are safer here than anywhere else in South Asia."
A Call for Unity and Reform
Nahid Islam urged NCP members to avoid internal conflict and stay alert against communal provocations and anti-state propaganda. He stressed that unity is the party’s greatest strength as they work to implement the reforms born from the July mass uprising.
"The NCP must fight for justice both in Parliament and on the streets," he added, also calling on the government to take immediate action against the rising measles outbreak to prevent further child fatalities.
