The Chinese-flagged tanker ‘Shan Gang Fa Jian’ docked at Chittagong Port’s Dolphin Jetty on Sunday afternoon, carrying over 34,000 tons of diesel from Malaysia.
The 184.95-meter vessel initially anchored at the outer anchorage on Friday night. Due to its 10-meter draft exceeding the 9.5-meter limit for the Karnaphuli River jetties, 7,727 tons of fuel were first transferred to four smaller lighterage vessels.
Under the supervision of senior port pilots and assisted by tugboats, the lightened ship successfully berthed at Dolphin Jetty No. 6 in Patenga at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
Nazrul Islam, Managing Partner of the ship’s local agent, Pride Shipping Lines, confirmed that the remaining cargo is expected to be discharged within two days. He also noted that another tanker carrying 27,300 tons of diesel from Singapore vacated the jetty earlier that morning.
Syed Refayet Hamim, Secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority, stated that vessels carrying energy supplies are being prioritized for berthing to address the national energy demand. According to Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) sources, the government is diversifying import sources to ensure a steady fuel supply.
