An illegal jetty at the junction of the Karnaphuli River and Majhirghat canal remains in place despite formal eviction orders from the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA). The unauthorized structure, allegedly operated by M/s SS Trading, is obstructing water flow, causing silt accumulation, and hindering cargo vessel movement.
The encroachment involves the installation of steel pontoons, cranes, and conveyor belts at the mouth of the canal in Madarbari Mouza. Licensed wharf owner Nezam Uddin Khan and canal leaseholder Md. Sarwar Alam filed formal complaints with the CPA Chairman, accusing Ferdous Yusuf and SS Trading of occupying river space beyond their permitted limits.
A field investigation and survey conducted by the CPA confirmed the allegations. The probe found that SS Trading moved approximately 70 feet west of their designated area, effectively blocking the canal mouth.
A 120-foot steel pontoon jetty built without authorization. Filling of the river bank line, leading to rapid siltation. Obstruction of salt-carrying boats and increased risk of ship collisions during unloading. The occupants have reportedly failed to pay a Tk 5 lakh fine imposed in 2022 for unauthorized river use.
Commodore Kawsar Rashid, Member (Engineering) of the CPA, issued a formal notice demanding the immediate removal of all structures and the excavated soil.
CPA Authorized Officer Sadia Afrin Kochi confirmed the findings, stating, "The complaint has been proven through on-site surveys. We have ordered the removal of the jetty and equipment. If they do not comply, we will proceed with an immediate eviction drive and further legal action."
Attempts to reach the owners of SS Trading were unsuccessful. While a representative, Mashrur Ahmed, initially promised a statement from the owners, no response has been provided, and the management is reportedly avoiding public contact.
