A month-long drive to plant 10,000 saplings began on Saturday afternoon at DC Park in Faujdarhat, Chattogram. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah inaugurated the program, emphasizing the goal of transforming the area into an eco-friendly, climate-resilient space.
“We are planting 10,000 trees of 54 different species over the next 30 days,” the DC stated. “The program kicked off today with 2,000 saplings. We are prioritizing Sonalu and Krishnachura to create a vibrant landscape, alongside a dedicated fruit garden on the north side to attract diverse bird species and enhance the visitor experience.”
The initiative focuses on coastal-appropriate, medicinal, and rare tree species. According to the DC, the project aims to showcase Bangladesh’s natural beauty while providing a safe, nature-focused environment for families.
DC Park is widely known for its annual flower festival, which featured 140 species last year. Zahidul Islam Miah noted that current development plans are being shaped by visitor feedback.
This local effort aligns with the government’s broader mission to plant 250 million trees over the next five years. Officials hope the project will help restore forest cover lost to rapid urbanization and industrialization in the region.
The inauguration was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Sharif Uddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Sakhawat Jamil Saikat, Sitakunda Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Fakhrul Islam, and other local administration officials.
