World Veterinary Day 2026 was celebrated with a daylong program at GAU on Saturday. The event featured a colorful campus rally, academic discussions, and free medical services for hundreds of local livestock and pets.
Organized by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, and supported by several pharmaceutical partners, the program focused on this year's global theme: "Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health." The theme underscores the critical contributions of veterinary professionals to animal welfare, public health, food safety, and scientific research.
The day’s events began at 10:00 a.m. with a campus rally. Teachers, students, and university officials marched from the Veterinary Faculty Complex to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), carrying banners and placards to raise awareness about the profession's responsibilities.
At 10:30 a.m., a discussion meeting was held at the VTH premises, presided over by Veterinary Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Md. Taimur Islam. University Treasurer Prof. Dr. Md. Shafiul Islam Afrad attended as the chief guest. In his address, Prof. Afrad emphasized the need to enhance veterinary research and technical capabilities. He also expressed the administration's commitment to upgrading the teaching hospital and its laboratories to international standards.
Special guests included Director of Student Welfare Prof. Dr. Mohammad Sharif Raihan and VTH Director Prof. Dr. Anup Kumar Talukder. VTH Associate Director Prof. Dr. Jiban Chandra Das delivered the welcome speech, followed by remarks from local and international students who shared their campus experiences.
Following the discussion, a free animal treatment and vaccination camp was officially inaugurated. Farmers and pet owners from across Gazipur received direct veterinary services from faculty members and students. Throughout the day, medical care was provided to 43 cows, 54 goats and sheep, 162 poultry birds, 27 cats, 4 dogs, 11 pigeons, and 4 pet birds.
The program concluded with guests touring a student poster exhibition that showcased eco-friendly veterinary medicine, disease prevention strategies, and innovative animal feed solutions.
World Veterinary Day has been observed globally since 2000, falling on the last Saturday of April every year.
