A young mother and her minor son died after being struck by a train on the Chitra River railway bridge in Narail Sadar Upazila on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Poli Begum, 25, and her son, Furkan Bhuiyan. Poli was the wife of Nur Islam Bhuiyan, a laborer from Muldair village in Auria Union.
Witnesses reported seeing Poli Begum standing on the bridge with her child in her arms around noon. The Dhaka-to-Benapole Ruposhi Bangla Express struck them as it crossed the river in the Barashula area.
Poli died instantly at the scene. Local residents rushed to rescue the child, who had fallen from his mother’s arms during the impact. Furkan was taken to Narail Sadar Hospital in critical condition, where emergency doctors later pronounced him dead.
While the exact circumstances remain unclear, police suspect the incident may have been a suicide.
"We have kept the bodies at the hospital morgue and informed the Railway Police, as the incident occurred on the tracks," said Md. Oli Mia, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Narail Sadar Police Station.
The Railway Police will conduct further investigations and oversee legal proceedings.
