Aranya Toufiq, a 16-year-old student from Dhaka, made a stunning debut at the historic Abdul Jabbar’s Balikhela on Saturday, defeating an opponent 12 years his senior.
The teenager from Horizon International School took down Mohammad Manik of Halishahar in a duel that lasted just over a minute at the Laldighi Maidan. Toufiq, the youngest competitor in this year’s tournament, traveled from Dhaka’s Moghbazar specifically to participate in the traditional wrestling match as a hobby.
Accompanied by his coach, Samir, Toufiq appeared nervous but determined as he entered the ring. "I was facing someone much larger and older than me," Toufiq said after his victory. "I took the plunge and kept my courage. It feels incredible to win on my first attempt at such a legendary venue."
Toufiq’s interest in wrestling began in childhood, fueled by watching matches on television and occasional practice in Dhaka. His father, Towfiqul Alam, a senior private sector official, and his mother, Dr. Roxana, have consistently encouraged his passion for the sport.
The century-old Abdul Jabbar’s Balikhela has entered its 117th year, attracting over a hundred wrestlers (Balis) from across the country. Toufiq’s victory has become a highlight of this year’s festivities, bridging the gap between modern education and folk tradition.
"I had heard so much about Balikhela. Seeing it and winning here is a dream come true," said the aspiring wrestler, who hopes to represent the country on larger stages in the future.
