At least eight people were injured in a violent clash between a bride's and groom's families over seating arrangements at a wedding reception in Laxmipur.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon (April 25) at the residence of Md. Harun in Ward 4 of Tumchar Union.
According to locals, the wedding of Harun's son, Faruk Hossain, and Anwar Hossain's daughter, Chamia Akhter from Ward 1 of Bhabaniganj Union, took place on Friday (April 24). A reception feast was arranged at the groom's house the following day. An argument broke out in the afternoon when the bride's family arrived and disagreed over the dining arrangements, which quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
The bride's family alleged that members of the groom's side were standing over them and holding onto chairs while the guests were trying to eat, making them feel insulted. This perceived disrespect sparked an initial scuffle. The situation worsened when the groom's relatives allegedly attacked the bride's guests with sticks and vandalized a microbus.
Md. Shah Alam, President of the BNP unit in Bhabaniganj Union's Ward 1, confirmed that a heated dispute over the dining tables triggered the violent clash between the two sides.
Members of the groom’s family declined to comment on the incident to the press.
Several of the injured—identified as Ibrahim Khalil, Md. Anik, Mehedi Hasan Anand, Md. Rana, Md. Yamin, Md. Samjid, and Md. Shah Alam—were taken to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital. Dr. Joydev Nandi, the on-duty physician at the hospital, stated that at least six individuals arrived with injuries and were provided with primary medical care.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Shahin of the Sadar Model Police Station visited both the hospital and the scene of the clash. "We have spoken to both parties. Legal action will be taken if a formal written complaint is filed," he said.
