Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said renovation work on the Zia Memorial Museum in Chattogram will begin soon.
The minister visited the museum, located in Kazir Deuri, around 12:00pm on Friday. During the visit, he inspected different sections of the facility and was briefed by officials on its current condition.
He said the museum has deteriorated due to a lack of maintenance, with several structural issues now visible. He warned that the condition could worsen further, particularly in the event of an earthquake.
Highlighting its significance, the minister said the site holds important historical value. Former President Ziaur Rahman was killed at the Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981, and the building was later converted into the Zia Memorial Museum.
He described the museum as a national heritage site and said it carries emotional and historical importance for many people in Bangladesh.
“The structure has become worn over time. We must renovate it quickly so that visitors can better understand its history,” he said.
The minister added that the renovation plan will be finalised after discussions with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and relevant stakeholders. He expressed hope that the restoration will help preserve the site and present its historical significance more effectively.
Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md. Ziauddin, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah and Museum Administrative Officer Arpita Das Gupta were present during the visit.
