New Zealand kept their tournament hopes alive with a convincing win over Sri Lanka, knocking the hosts out of the competition.

The result leaves New Zealand set to face England next, a match that could prove crucial for qualification. Pakistan, meanwhile, will be closely watching the net run rate standings ahead of their remaining games.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said his team believed a score between 140 and 160 would be competitive on the pitch. He noted that the wicket offered more turn than expected and rewarded bowlers who reduced their pace and maintained disciplined lengths. Santner praised his partnership with McConchie and said adaptability was key on a surface that spun more as the ball slowed down.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka admitted it was a disappointing performance in front of the home crowd. He said Sri Lanka started well but lost control due to the Santner-led partnership and misread the pitch conditions after choosing to bowl first. Shanaka acknowledged New Zealand’s superior bowling and urged his batters to take more responsibility and show greater intent in T20 cricket.

The Player of the Match award went to Rachin Ravindra for his outstanding all-round performance. Ravindra said the team’s plan was to bowl slower deliveries, following Santner’s lead, as conditions favoured reduced pace. He also praised the Sri Lankan crowd for their energy and sportsmanship.

Ravindra’s figures of 4 for 27 capped a dominant bowling display, which began with Matt Henry dismissing Nissanka with the first ball of the chase. Sri Lanka never recovered and struggled throughout their innings.

The win sends a strong message to the remaining teams. While Sri Lanka exit the tournament and may need to rethink their T20 combination, New Zealand move forward with confidence as the competition intensifies.
