The United States has announced the deployment of around 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East as a fragile two-week ceasefire with Iran nears its end on April 22.

According to a report by The Washington Post, about 6,000 naval and marine personnel will arrive with the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush. Another 4,200 troops are expected to join the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group. The reinforcements are likely to reach the region by the end of this month.

At present, nearly 50,000 US troops are stationed across the Middle East, mainly to counter Iranian military activities.

US President Donald Trump recently said the conflict could end quickly if Iran “acts wisely.” He also suggested that resolving the crisis could lead to a significant drop in global fuel prices.

Tensions escalated further after the US announced a naval blockade of Iranian ports following unsuccessful talks in Islamabad. The US Central Command claimed it had disrupted about 90 percent of Iran’s seaborne trade within 36 hours. US forces may also begin inspecting Iranian vessels if required.

Iran has strongly criticised the move, calling it a sign of a possible ceasefire violation. Ali Abdullahi, a senior Iranian military official, warned that Tehran would not accept any interference with shipping in the Persian Gulf or the Red Sea. He said Iran is prepared to take necessary steps to protect its trade routes.

Despite rising tensions, there are indications that Washington and Tehran may resume talks later this week. However, the situation remains volatile, with military buildup and strong rhetoric from both sides.
