Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is a liberal democratic party, not a regimental one.
He made the remarks on Sunday (June 14) morning at a discussion meeting held at the National Press Club to mark the death anniversary of former President and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
Mirza Fakhrul, who also serves as the BNP Secretary General, noted that Bangladesh would have advanced significantly had Ziaur Rahman lived another decade. He criticized the Awami League for historically portraying Zia as a murderer, asserting instead that he was not just a statesman, but a national hero.
"Ziaur Rahman worked for the development of every state sector. He fostered the core concept of Bangladeshi nationalism, institutionalized democracy, and worked to revitalize the country's fragile economy," Fakhrul said.
The minister concluded by noting that Ziaur Rahman’s vision and ideals are reflected in Tarique Rahman. Fakhrul expressed optimism that the "new Bangladesh" will continue to move forward under his leadership.
