The government has appointed Aminul Islam as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs issued the official notification on Monday morning.
Aminul Islam succeeds Tajul Islam, who was appointed to the post with the rank of Attorney General in September 2024 following the formation of the interim government.
Under the previous leadership, the prosecution filed 24 formal charges related to crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 uprising. These cases are currently being heard in Tribunals 1 and 2. So far, verdicts have been delivered in three cases, resulting in the conviction of 26 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and top police officials.
Several high-profile cases are still pending. Verdicts are awaited for two major cases, including the murder of Abu Sayeed, the first martyr of the July uprising. Additionally, a verdict regarding crimes against humanity in Rampura is scheduled for March 4.
Beyond the uprising, the tribunal is investigating enforced disappearances and torture reported during the Awami League’s tenure. Notable figures currently facing trial include retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan and several former senior ministers and members of parliament.
