Bhola Celebrates 'Autocracy-Free Day' Commemorating 2024 Student Uprising

Students and citizens from all walks of life held a joyous procession on Tuesday morning to mark 'Bhola Autocracy-Free Day.'

The commemorative rally began at the Bhola Elisha Road Square paraded through the city's major thoroughfares and concluded with a brief gathering in front of the district Awami League office.

Participants observed the day to remember the historic events of August 4, 2024. During the peak of the nationwide student-public uprising, leaders and activists of the then-ruling Awami League and its affiliated organizations were forced to flee the area. To honor that turning point in local history residents now observe the date annually.

Tuesday's procession saw widespread participation from students, working professionals and key organizers of the original movement.

Prominent figures at the event included July Revolution Convener Israfil Hussain Jabir, National Citizen Party (NCP) District Organizing Secretary Rashid Ahmed, and District Chhatra Shakti leaders Mohammad Himu and Jobayer Chowdhury.

They were joined by Bhola College Chhatra Dal Convener Arafat Islam Ifti, Member Secretary Md. Abdus Samad District Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nur Mohammad Rubel, and Bangladesh Chhatra Samaj District General Secretary Mohammad Hossain, alongside several other local student leaders.
