The container ship MV CNC Uranus struck a retaining wall in the Karnaphuli Channel at Chittagong Port after suffering a steering failure on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. A mechanical fault in the steering system caused the vessel to hit red buoy number two before wedging into the channel's retaining wall.
Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Syed Refaet Hamim confirmed the accident, noting that no casualties have been reported. Crucially for national supply chains, he assured the public that the main port channel remains open and fully safe for other maritime traffic.
A coordinated, multi-agency rescue operation is underway. The port authority has deployed two powerful tugboats Kandari-4 and Kandari-11 to the scene. The Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard are also actively working to secure the stranded vessel and move it to safety without disrupting port operations.
