The Election Commission (EC) has clearly stated that it is a punishable offense for government officials and employees to seek votes or campaign in favor of either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ in a referendum.
On Thursday, the EC sent an official directive to all returning officers across the country. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser, and other relevant authorities.
The directive states that government employees may inform and raise public awareness about the referendum, but they are strictly prohibited from encouraging voters in any way to vote for either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. Such actions may influence the outcome of the referendum and are therefore considered punishable offenses under the Referendum Ordinance 2025 and the Representation of the People Order 1972.
The Election Commission has instructed the concerned authorities to take necessary measures in accordance with the law.
