On Tuesday, a U.S. F-35C fighter jet shot down an Iranian Shahed-139 drone in the Arabian Sea. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the drone was approaching the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier "aggressively" and with "unclear intent."
Navy Captain Tim Hawkins confirmed the action was taken in self-defense to protect personnel and equipment. No U.S. casualties or damages were reported.
Hours after the drone intercept, a second maritime incident occurred in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) harassed the M/V Stena Imperative, a U.S.-flagged and crewed merchant vessel. Two IRGC boats and a Mohajer drone reportedly approached the tanker at high speeds, threatening to board and seize the ship.
These military encounters come at a precarious time as diplomats attempt to organize nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington. President Donald Trump has maintained a strategy of "maximum pressure," deploying a carrier strike group to the region following Iran's recent domestic unrest.
While both sides have hinted at potential negotiations, President Trump warned that "bad things" may occur if a deal is not reached, while Iranian officials claim arrangements for talks are still underway.
