US President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday that the Iranian government is in a "state of collapse" and is urgently seeking the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that Tehran reached out to Washington as it attempts to "figure out" its current leadership situation. These claims come amid unverified reports that Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been severely injured, leaving the country’s leadership in a state of uncertainty.
Despite Trump’s claims of a regime in chaos, diplomatic efforts to end the current conflict appear stalled. On Monday, Iranian officials proposed a ceasefire focused specifically on reopening the Strait of Hormuz—a vital global shipping lane—while delaying discussions on its nuclear program and missiles.
However, President Trump has reportedly rejected this proposal. According to US officials, Trump insists that Iran’s nuclear program must be addressed immediately as part of any initial agreement. Tehran, meanwhile, maintains that nuclear talks can only begin after the US ends its blockade of Iranian ports.
The White House has not clarified how this communication from Iran was received, and the Iranian government has yet to comment on Trump's assertions. While lawmakers in Tehran remain divided over nuclear negotiations, the true status of Iran’s internal leadership remains unconfirmed by independent intelligence.
