Venezuela's opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in the South American nation.
In a striking move, Machado, who has been forced into hiding following the widely disputed 2024 Venezuelan election, dedicated the prize to the "suffering people of Venezuela and to President Donald Trump for his decisive support of our cause!
In X post, Machado asserted that to achieve freedom and democracy, Venezuela counts on President Trump and the US as principal allies. The award comes amidst significant international attention, as President Trump—a widely discussed nominee missed out the prize. The White House responded critically to the Nobel Committee's decision, with a communications director stating the committee "proved they place politics over peace" by not recognising Trump.
Machado's Nobel recognition is viewed as major boost to the pro-democracy movement in Venezuela.
