India secured a thrilling 17-run victory over South Africa in the first ODI of the three-match series in Ranchi, taking a 1-0 lead. India successfully defended their target of 349, with South Africa falling short at 332.

India's Innings Highlights (349/7) , Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, after the early loss of Jaiswal, put up a massive 161-run partnership in just over 21 overs. Kohli scored his world-record 50th ODI hundred (first since February), celebrating emotionally before accelerating to score 35 runs off his next 17 balls.

Rohit Sharma hit three sixes, with his third taking him past Shahid Afridi's world record for most ODI sixes (351). India's scoring was hampered during the middle overs as the old ball and pitch slowness made hitting difficult, although they finished strongly thanks to Kohli and KL Rahul.

South Africa's Response and India's Bowling (332/9), Pacer Harshit Rana provided a crucial early breakthrough, dismissing Rickelton and Quinton de Kock for ducks in the second over, leaving South Africa reeling at 11 for 3. Despite the poor start, South Africa staged multiple strong partnerships. Marco Jansen (70) and Matthew Breetzke (70s), supported by Brevis and De Zorzi (30s), kept the chase alive. Jansen's 70 was the fastest fifty by a South African against India.

With the target down to 123 from 17 overs, Kuldeep Yadav dismissed both Jansen and Breetzke in the same over, dramatically shifting the momentum back to India. Bosch (67) brought South Africa to the brink of victory, needing 19 off 10 balls, but was ultimately contained by Arshdeep Singh's tight bowling in the final overs.

India's bowlers had to contend with a significant disadvantage as heavy dew made the pitch dramatically easier to bat on under lights, highlighting the importance of the initial three wickets.
