


The police have said that the young man who opened fire with a weapon during the clash between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists in Ishwardi, Pabna, is a Jamaat activist.
Ishwardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) ASM Abdur Noor confirmed this information on Sunday (November 30) evening.
He said, "The young man who opened fire with a weapon on the day of the clash, Tushar Mondal, is a Jamaat activist. His identity was identified when his picture went viral on social media. However, it has not been possible to arrest him yet; the police are conducting a drive to arrest him."
Tushar Mondal is the son of Taher Mondal of Velupara area of Ishwardi Municipality. Several local sources said that Tushar is known to be a close associate of Mamun Mondal, the nephew of Jamaat's Pabna district Ameer and Jamaat's nominated candidate for Pabna-4 constituency Professor Abu Taleb Mondal.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested five people from both parties in two separate cases filed in connection with the clash.
Two Jamaat and three BNP workers were arrested in a drive on Saturday (November 29) night. They were sent to jail through a court on Sunday (November 30) afternoon.
OC Abdur Noor said, "Both parties have filed cases alleging each other. The police are investigating the cases filed by both parties. We are arresting the accused as per the legal process. Police patrols have been intensified in the area to control the situation."
Earlier, two separate cases were filed in connection with the BNP-Jamaat clash on Saturday (November 29) afternoon.
Sahapur Union Krishak Dal convener Makkel Mridha's son and Union Swechchhasebak Dal general secretary Badhan Hasan Alim filed a case with Ishwardi police station, naming 32 Jamaat leaders. In addition, 150 to 200 unknown persons were also named as accused. The main accused in this case is Pabna district Jamaat Ameer and Jamaat nominated candidate for Pabna-4 constituency Abu Taleb Mondal.
On the other hand, Ishwardi Upazila Jamaat secretary Saidul Islam filed another case with the same police station, naming 38 BNP leaders and activists. The main accused in the case is Sahapur Union Krishak Dal convener Makkel Mridha. In addition, 100 to 150 unknown persons have been named as accused. Most of them are relatives and followers of Pabna-4 constituency BNP nominated candidate and district BNP convener Habibur Rahman Habib.
According to police and locals, a clash broke out between Jamaat and BNP at Char Gargari village in Ishwardi upazila around 4:30 pm on Thursday (November 27) over an election campaign by a Jamaat candidate.
At least fifty leaders and activists from both sides were injured in the clash. The area has been tense since the incident. Additional police have been deployed in the area. Many leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat have fled the area to avoid arrest.
