The National Independent Inquiry Commission, formed to investigate the 2009 BDR mutiny and killings, today submitted its report to the government, represented by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
The report was handed over by Commission head Major General (retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman and other members at the State Guesthouse Jamuna. The report claims that the Awami League (AL) was organizationally involved in the carnage.
Commission member Jahangir Kabir Talukder stated the massacre was pre-planned and alleged that then Member of Parliament Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh "acted as the principal coordinator."
It was further claimed that the incident took place with the "green signal" from the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Local AL leaders reportedly played a direct role in protecting those involved, with Jahangir citing a group of 20–25 people entering Pilkhana but exiting with over 200. The investigation found "strong evidence of direct involvement of external forces" in addition to the then-ruling party.
The report suggested that responsibility lies with the then head of government and the army chief. Police, RAB, and intelligence agencies were said to have "failed miserably," and some media outlets were accused of playing an "unprofessional role."
Commission head Fazlur Rahman assured maximum professionalism despite challenges, including the 16-year gap, destruction of evidence, and departure of individuals involved. Witnesses were extensively interviewed, and prior investigation reports were collected.
Chief Adviser Professor Yunus acknowledged the report, stating the nation had long been in the dark about the killings and that the work would help unearth the truth and serve as a "valuable national asset."
