The flood situation in Bangladesh's northeastern Haor region is expected to improve significantly over the next three days. According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), a reduction in rainfall both upstream in India and within Bangladesh has halted the rising water levels.
"The flooding situation is currently stable and water is receding slowly. We expect a visible improvement after three days," said Md Monzur Rahman, Executive Engineer of the FFWC, on Friday afternoon.
Despite the stabilizing trend, seven major rivers across the region remain above their danger marks as of 9:00 AM Friday:
Sunamganj: The Naljur River is flowing 52cm above the danger level at Jagannathpur.
Netrokona: The Magra River remains significantly high at 79cm above the mark, while the Bhugai-Kangsha is 62cm above. The Someshwari and Dhanu-Baulai are also over danger levels.
Habiganj & Sylhet: The Sutang and Kalni-Kushiyara rivers remain swollen, though levels are expected to drop.
Meteorological agencies predict only light to moderate rainfall over the next 72 hours. This weather pattern will allow the Surma-Kushiyara basin in Sylhet and Sunamganj to drain, providing much-needed relief to low-lying areas.
While the Manu River in Moulvibazar may see a slight, temporary rise in the next 24 hours, the overall outlook for the Haor basin—including the Khowai, Juri, and Sutang rivers—is a steady decline in water levels.
