The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall across the country over the next 24 hours, starting Friday morning. An active monsoon is expected to impact parts of all eight divisions, with precipitation likely to exceed 88mm in several areas.
Authorities have warned that the intense downpour could trigger landslides in the hilly regions of the Chattogram division. Additionally, residents in the Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas should prepare for temporary water-logging in low-lying streets.
The monsoon’s intensity is already visible; Chattogram recorded the country’s highest rainfall at 211mm in the 24 hours leading up to Friday morning. Temperatures across the country are expected to remain largely unchanged.
Compounding the weather risk, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) reported that five major rivers—the Sangu, Matamuhuri, Kushiyara, Manu, and Khowai—are now flowing above danger levels at multiple points. Data shows water levels are rising at 79 out of 127 monitoring stations nationwide.
As conditions remain volatile over the North Bay, maritime ports have been advised to keep local cautionary signal No. 3 hoisted. Citizens in vulnerable areas are urged to stay alert and follow local safety instructions.
