Ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced plans to return to Bangladesh from exile in India this December to surrender in court. In her first interview since fleeing in 2024, the 78-year-old leader stated she will be joined by senior Awami League colleagues to face legal proceedings.
Hasina currently faces a death sentence, issued in absentia last November, for her role in the deadly crackdown on the 2024 student-led uprising. Despite the significant risks of arrest or execution, she expressed a firm desire to return to "her own soil" to support party workers facing repression.
“I believe in justice,” Hasina told Reuters, characterizing the current legal proceedings as “farcical” and stating her intent to challenge them in person. She further called for the lifting of the ban on the Awami League, arguing that the public should be the ones to judge the party’s record through the democratic process.
While the interim government in Dhaka has repeatedly sought her extradition, Hasina claims she has not consulted foreign governments and intends to return voluntarily. Her arrival is expected to be a major test for the country's legal system and could further impact the strained diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and India.
