Ukraine has secured a political agreement with the United States to manufacture PAC-3 Patriot missile interceptors locally, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Thursday. The move is seen as a major step in bolstering Ukraine’s long-term defense against Russian ballistic missile strikes.
Speaking after a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Turkey, Zelenskiy stated that technical teams would begin working immediately to finalize production licenses. "We resolved this issue politically," he said, emphasizing the need for quick implementation. In the immediate term, a new package of US missiles is expected to arrive within days.
Beyond missile defense, Zelenskiy noted ongoing discussions regarding a potential "drone deal" for joint production. While no formal agreement has been signed, the US is currently testing several types of Ukrainian aerial and marine drones.
The Ukrainian leader also highlighted plans to develop a cheaper, mass-produced anti-missile system with European allies, with an upcoming meeting scheduled in France. Despite the diplomatic progress and Zelenskiy’s description of Trump as "constructive," the conflict continues as Russia demands the cession of the Donetsk region.
