The Bangladesh government is actively pursuing the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to face trial, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam confirmed on Thursday. Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she stated there is "no shortage" of diplomatic efforts to bring the former leader back to the country.
The Home and Law ministries are currently reviewing potential legal hurdles in the extradition process. These efforts began under the interim government and have been intensified by the new administration formed in February 2026.
Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have both been sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal. Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir emphasized that the government seeks her return through a "transparent judicial process".
India, where Hasina is currently located, confirmed in April that it is examining Dhaka’s formal request. Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the request is under review according to India’s internal legal frameworks. While public demand for her return remains high, Minister Obaed acknowledged that the legal procedures involved will take time to complete.
