Mahmudur Rahman (Mahmud Sohel), News Editor at Gazi Television (GTV) and IT and Training Secretary of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), has been honored with the 'National Award Greenman-2026' for his significant contributions to raising public awareness about the environment and climate change.
Sohel, a former president of the Marine Journalists Network (MJN), received the award on Wednesday (September 2) during a discussion meeting and reception at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club. The event was organized by Sabuj Andolan, an environmental organization, to mark its founding anniversary. The award is presented annually to distinguished citizens for their contributions to environmental journalism.
Bappi Sardar, founder and chairman of Sabuj Andolan, presided over the program, which focused on the theme: "Way Forward to Ensure the Use of Renewable Energy in Resolving Power Deficits." Professor Dr. Md. Kamrul Ahsan, Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, attended the event as the chief guest.
The Greenman Award 2026 was presented to seven organizations and prominent individuals for their efforts in promoting environmental awareness.
With a career spanning nearly 23 years, Mahmud Sohel began his journey in journalism as a campus reporter at the University of Dhaka. Over two decades, he has worked across print, radio, television, online, and digital platforms. He previously served as a senior reporter for Diganta TV, SATV, ATN News, and Ajker Patrika, as well as the online in-charge of Desh TV and head of digital at GTV.
Throughout his career, Sohel has faced legal harassment and political pressure due to his investigative reporting. Notably, he had to appear before a Rangpur court multiple times following a suit filed by former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi over corruption allegations.
Colleagues view this recognition as a major milestone in his career, acknowledging his resilience, integrity, and dedication to environmental reporting despite professional hazards and adverse conditions.
In addition to his current role as News Editor at GTV and IT & Training Secretary at DRU, Sohel also serves as the Convener of the Jashore Journalists Forum in Dhaka.
