The price of bottled soybean oil has risen by Tk.5 per litre to Tk.204 Commerce Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Khan announced at an emergency briefing on edible oil at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

This is the second price hike in less than three months. Previously On April 29 the government had raised the price by Tk.4 to Tk.199 per litre with a five-litre bottle priced at Tk 975. At the same time loose soybean oil rose by Tk.4 to Tk.180 per litre while palm oil prices remained unchanged.

Loose soybean oil prices had started climbing after the war in West Asia disrupted crude edible oil imports. Despite this, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir had assured consumers on April 12 that supply was "adequate" and prices would not rise a position the government later reversed.

This marks the latest in a series of increases. On October 14 last year, the Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vanaspati Manufacturers Association had raised bottled soybean oil by Tk.6 to Tk.195 per litre, loose soybean oil by Tk 8 to Tk.176 and loose palm oil by Tk 13 to Tk.163 per litre. A five-litre bottle of soybean oil also rose by Tk.25 to Tk.945 at the time.
