Iranian hackers have attempted cyberattacks on multiple U.S. infrastructure systems including water utilities, telecommunications and energy networks according to four people familiar with government and industry cyber-threat intelligence. Though the attempts failed, officials say they highlight Iran's willingness to retaliate against the U.S. beyond the Middle East.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), along with other federal officials, warned in July that Iranian-linked hackers were trying to breach internet-connected devices used to manage critical infrastructure. CISA issued a follow-up advisory last month urging infrastructure operators to strengthen their cyber defenses.

The warnings come as tensions between Washington and Tehran escalate. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. had carried out what he called "large and powerful" strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, saying the action was retaliation for Iran's attempt to plant sea mines in the waterway and for a missile strike on a U.S. base in Jordan. Trump warned Iran would face an even stronger response if it retaliated further.

In other news, three long-serving incumbents in Massachusetts won their primary elections against significantly younger challengers while the USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in Thailand following a record-long deployment in the Middle East.
